This article has some really good points, and I think it could be applied to other areas also, such as home building, business plans, etc. Mainly the article focuses on planning, planning, and more planning, and finding the problems as you go. The most important, in fact by FAR the most important part of software programming (or any kind of creation process) is the planning phase. With software, you can write out absolutely all of the logic for a program, get all the kinks worked out, all of the problems ironed out in a small amount of time compared to doing it the other way around... coding and planning at the same time.
